Phantom energy: dark energy with w <--1 causes a cosmic doomsday.

چکیده
We explore the consequences that follow if the dark energy is phantom energy, in which the sum of the pressure and energy density is negative. The positive phantom-energy density becomes infinite in finite time, overcoming all other forms of matter, such that the gravitational repulsion rapidly brings our brief epoch of cosmic structure to a close. The phantom energy rips apart the Milky Way, solar system, Earth, and ultimately the molecules, atoms, nuclei, and nucleons of which we are composed, before the death of the Universe in a "big rip."

How a Brane Cosmological Constant Can Trick Us into Thinking That W < −1
Observations exploring the contemporary cosmic acceleration have sparked interest in dark energy models possessing equations of state with w < −1. We review how the cosmic expansion history of a Dvali–Gabadadze–Porrati (DGP) braneworld model with a standard brane cosmological constant can mimic that of ordinary 4–dimensional gravity with w < −1 “phantom” dark energy for observationally relevant...

متن کاملDark energy and viscous cosmology
Singularities in the dark energy universe are discussed, assuming that there is a bulk viscosity in the cosmic fluid. In particular, it is shown how the physically natural assumption of letting the bulk viscosity be proportional to the scalar expansion in a spatially flat FRW universe can drive the fluid into the phantom region (w < −1), even if lies in the quintessence region (w > −1) in the n...
متن کاملEquation of state description of the dark energy transition between quintessence and phantom regimes
The dark energy crossing of the cosmological constant boundary (the transition between the quintessence and phantom regimes) is described in terms of the implicitly defined dark energy equation of state. The generalizations of the models explicitly constructed to exhibit the crossing provide the insight into the cancellation mechanism which makes the transition possible. The determination of th...
متن کاملForecasting cosmic doomsday from CMB-LSS cross-correlations
A broad class of dark energy models, which have been proposed in attempts at solving the cosmological constant problems, predict a late time variation of the equation of state with redshift. The variation occurs as a scalar field picks up speed on its way to negative values of the potential. The negative potential energy eventually turns the expansion into contraction and the local universe und...
